About The Area
Albox |
|
Albox is an important market town in the Almanzora valley, surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Sierra de los Filabres and Sierra de las Estancias. As you would expect, there are numerous services and facilities such as post office, schools, shops and supermarkets, banks, 24 hour medical centre, dentists, municipal swimming pool and gyms. There are plans for a brand new shopping and entertainment complex on the outskirts of the town. This will include a number of well known retailers, restaurants and a cinema. The nearest hospital is in Huercal Overa, about 20 kilometers away. Albox is approximately 45 minutes from the coastal resorts of Garrucha and Mojacar, and approx. 160 kilometers from Granada and the Sierra Nevada with its popular ski resorts. |
Almeria City |

The City, built at the foot of a stark grey mountain is a mixture of the old and the new. The modern areas are alive with shops and pavement bars, cafes and restaurants. The old quarter is a maze of narrow, winding streets and high on the hill sits the Alcazaba, a fine example of Moorish military fortification, dominating the bay where the port of Almeria is still very much a working port. This city was chosen to host the 2005 Mediterranean Games which created a haven for sports enthusiasts with its many new facilities. |
Arboleas |

Arboleas, a small village approximately 8 kilometers from Albox, is expanding rapidly. It has a post office, a number of supermarkets, banks, bars, restaurants and a medical centre. There is a school for under 12s, and a shool bus service for older pupils to Albox. There is a lively Saturday morning market and a municipal swimming pool. |
Fines |

Fines is a small Spanish village situated in the Almanzora Valley approx.10 minutes from Albox. It is surrounded by the spectacular mountain ranges known as the "Sierra de Los Filabres" and the "Sierra de Las Estancias". This area offers many outdoor interests including wonderful country walks, horse riding and cycling. |
Garrucha |

Just down the road from Mojacar, Garrucha is a lively fishing port with a life of its own besides tourism. It has a good sandy beach, lots of shops, restaurants and bars to visit with local fish and seafood a speciality. There are a number of golf courses nearby. |
Mojacar |

Mojacar is a growing tourist resort, with the village itself perched high on the hillside, a striking cubist image of whitewashed Moorish buildings, and the 5 kilometer long beach area below. Both the beach area and the village offer a host of shops, hotels and restaurants and there is a lively nightlife of music and bars. There are a number of golf courses close by. |
Velez Blanco |

Only a few minutes from Velez Rubio, this is a town which boasts its own Moorish castle, which has been preserved in the Arabic style. Visit the caves where you will see paintings which are six thousand years old, including the famous Indalo symbol, which was discovered in 1868 and is used as a talisman for the province of Almeria. Before you leave, sample the water from one of the many fountains. It is the sweetest you will ever have tasted! Local facilities include a school for up to sixteen years old, a library and a small theatre. |
Velez Rubio |

Located at the foot of the Sierra Maria, this is a bustling town with lots of shops, bars and restaurants to visit. In the centre is the Convent of San Francisco, the church and the Town Hall. The scenery is beautiful with huge mountains rising up from the plateaux to create breathtaking views. It is an area well worth visiting. Local facilities include two schools for up to sixteen years old and another for sixteen to eighteen years old. There is a museum, a public swimming pool, tennis and football facilities and a library with internet facilities. |
Zurgena |

Zurgena is a small village approximately 4 kilometers from Arboleas. It has its own Town Hall, post office, supermarket, banks and bars. There is a school for under 12s and a secondary school only one kilometer away in the village of Alfoquia. It has its own medical centre and chemist where English is spoken. There is a public swimming pool in the next village. |
